Coleen Dixon, LMFT
My name is Coleen Dixon and I’m the founder of Knit Psychotherapy and Knit Psychotherapy Collective.
My introduction to therapy began much like yours—on the couch as a client. There were a lot of things that weren’t working in my life despite my absolute best efforts. Can you relate? Fast forward over a decade and many years of schooling, training, and supervision have led me to walking with hundreds of clients. I’ve been honored to bear witness to the stories, traumas, successes, and celebrations with each one of them.
One of the most important factors in a successful therapy journey is the therapeutic relationship, so here’s a little more about me as a person:
I think the best way to describe me is a socially gregarious introvert. I love connecting with people, but I desperately need my alone time. When I’m not with clients you’ll find me spending time with my family and friends. I enjoy working out, doing DIY projects, designing/decorating, gardening, and spending time with my community at church. I’m a PA transplant—I moved from the south three years ago and delight in the seasons of the north east. My relationship with God is the most important part of my life. I have a special interest in working with women and families in ministry as they navigate the challenges of everything it entails. A large portion of my training in graduate school was focused on Christian integration and theology in counseling, so I’m happy to incorporate spiritual direction when requested by clients. I recognize that not all clients who choose to seek counseling with me will identify with this and that’s ok—my goal is to honor where you are at regardless of your religion/spiritual background and identification. We are all worthy of love, honor, respect— and have powerful stories to knit together.

I practice EMDR as a complete therapy, which means we are using the model of adaptive information processing (AIP)—understanding how your emotions, behaviors, and thoughts make sense in the context of your experiences. We’ll work to gather information, understand how we might see changes in your day to day experience, and reprocess memories or sensations in your body that feel rooted in the past.

EMDR is the gold standard for trauma AND it’s the most research-backed psychotherapy in history. What researchers have shown is that EMDR is an effective treatment for many types of symptoms, struggles, and setbacks (or even just feeling stuck!). I’ve worked with clients through relational difficulties, depression, anxiety, substance use, complex trauma, ADHD, life adjustments, grief, childhood abuse, sexual assault, etc.

I do not accept insurance. I am happy to provide superbills for you to submit your insurance if you choose to file for out of network benefits.

EMDR therapy tends to be more brief than traditional talk therapy. On average most clients work with me for 4-6 months. For more complex trauma or PTSD, timelines can be a bit longer.

YES! I love working with couples and families. Over the years I’ve learned that EMDR is one of the most effective tools for getting past communication roadblocks. We’ll do a combination of sessions together and individually to help you achieve your goals.
